Trade Schools Requirement

 Trade School Requirements in America

High School

Attainment of high school qualifications is a prerequisite to joining trade school. Admission to trade school is not only restricted to applicants that have a high school diploma; it is also open to those who possess a GED. Applicants need to submit copies of their diplomas and high school transcripts or GED certificates as evidence of their attendance and completion of high school education.

Application

Once an applicant has decided on which trade school to attend, he will complete the application forms and submit them with any other supporting documentation that may be required. The applicant should provide accurate information as the school’s admission representative will check the forms for completion. Applications may also require non-refundable fees. Applicants often have to undergo an interview process where the school’s admission representative seeks to establish the applicant’s veracity, motivations for pursuing the course, financial capabilities and commitment to completing the course.

Admissions Test

Individuals who wish to join trade school will be required to take and obtain a qualifying score on the standardized placement tests that are ordinarily administered before admission. The tests are designed to test the applicant’s fundamental skills in math, reading and writing and the result is either used as a threshold for admission or to determine the courses that best meet the needs of the applicant. Examples of these standardized basic skills admission tests include Compass, Wonderlic and the American College Test.

Occupational Skills

There are some trade schools that require applicants to have previous relevant knowledge or experience in the occupational course in which they are enrolling, particularly if they are joining to obtain advanced certification. For example, for health professionals, such as nurses, applicants may need an associate degree or certificate before they can join trade school..
