ToggleCanada Tightens Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Rules for International Students
In a significant policy shift affecting thousands of international students, Canada has introduced stricter rules for its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program, effective November 2024.
Under the new guidelines, only graduates from academic programs aligned with Canada’s recognized skill shortage areas will now be eligible for the highly sought-after PGWP—a work permit that previously allowed most international graduates to remain and work in Canada for up to three years after their studies.
In addition to the new eligibility criteria, prospective students are now required to demonstrate a minimum of $20,635 CAD in available funds before arrival, ensuring they can cover living expenses independently.
Key Policy Changes:
✅ PGWP Eligibility now limited to students enrolled in designated programs tied to labour market needs
❌ General postgraduate programs or unapproved institutions may no longer qualify for PGWPs
Proof of Funds Increased: Students must show $20,635 CAD upfront to meet financial requirements
This move is part of Canada’s broader strategy to better align immigration and education with labour market demands, amid concerns over rising numbers of international students and pressure on housing and public services.
The new policy has sparked mixed reactions. While some applaud the effort to prioritize quality and relevance, others—especially students already in or applying to non-targeted programs—fear this could derail their long-term settlement plans.
“I chose Canada for its post-study work opportunities, but now I’m not even sure if my program qualifies,” said Tope, a Nigerian student currently applying for a Master’s program in Ontario.
International education consultants are now advising students to double-check PGWP eligibility for their chosen institutions and programs before proceeding with applications.
For Nigerian and African students considering Canada as a study destination, this is a wake-up call to plan strategically. Stay tuned with Undergragra for real-time updates on scholarships, immigration policies, and study abroad opportunities.
