FUOYE Management Sensitizes Students as Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infections Spread in Oye Community
In response to the increasing spread of Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (AURTI) within the Oye community, the management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has taken proactive measures to sensitize students and staff about the contagious airborne infection.
AURTI is defined as a contagious airborne infection affecting the ear, nose, and throat, with a duration of less than three weeks (21 days). Recent statistics from the University Health Services (UHS) reveal that AURTI cases constitute more than 50% of the clinic’s presentations by both staff and students of the university community.
To combat the spread of AURTI and other heat-related illnesses, the UHS recommends the following preventive measures:
- Use of Face Masks: Students and staff are advised to wear facemasks, especially in public places and when feeling unwell.
- Regular Hand Hygiene: Practicing regular hand hygiene with soap and water is essential to prevent the transmission of infections.
- Healthy Diet: Strengthening the immune system by consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is encouraged.
- Avoid Large Gatherings: To prevent dehydration and minimize exposure to potential infection sources, individuals are advised to avoid unnecessary large gatherings.
- Protection from Sun: Reducing exposure to the sun, using fans, and wearing light-colored clothing can help prevent heat-related illnesses.
- Limit Outdoor Activities: Refraining from engaging in exertive outdoor activities, particularly during peak heat hours, is recommended to reduce the risk of heatstroke and other heat-related ailments.
By adhering to these preventive measures, the FUOYE community aims to mitigate the spread of AURTI and safeguard the health and well-being of its members.
