Emeka Monye, Arise News’ Anambra correspondent, has launched a ₦2 million endowment fund to reward academic excellence in the Mass Communication department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State.
Announced during a university ceremony on Wednesday, the initiative will run for 10 years, awarding ₦200,000 annually to the department’s best graduating student. Monye, an alumnus of UNN and a native of Owerre-Olubor in Delta State, described the fund as his way of giving back and encouraging excellence in journalism education.
Monye expressed optimism that his gesture would inspire fellow journalists and well-meaning Nigerians to invest in intellectual development within the country’s higher institutions.
Reacting to the initiative, Leonard Ezeme, Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of the Career Services Centre at UNN, conveyed the university’s deep appreciation, highlighting the governing council’s gratitude for Monye’s generosity.
“We thank Emeka Monye of Arise News for his generous contribution to our university,” the university’s official statement read. The institution also extended an invitation to Monye or his representative to attend the Prize and Awards Night Convocation Ceremony, where the impact of his support will be recognized.
The statement concluded with heartfelt appreciation from the university’s acting Vice-Chancellor, underscoring the significance of Monye’s contribution in fostering academic excellence.
