LASU Dismisses Two Senior Lecturers Over Sexual Harassment, ₦10.6M Misconduct

University Affirms Zero Tolerance for Abuse and Corruption

Lagos State University (LASU) has officially dismissed two senior academic staff members, including Professor Olatunji Abanikanda and Dr. Khadeejah Kareem-Ibraheem, over serious allegations of sexual harassment, abuse of power, inhumane treatment of students, and financial misappropriation.

The decision was reached during a Governing Council meeting held on July 3, 2025, marking a firm step in LASU’s renewed push for accountability and ethical standards across its academic community.

Allegations Against Prof. Abanikanda

According to the findings presented at the council meeting, Prof. Abanikanda—a senior figure in LASU’s Faculty of Agriculture—was accused of:

  • Forcing students to work 14–16 hours a day in harsh conditions, including under heavy rain.

  • Denying students food, water, and rest breaks, even in physically demanding settings.

  • Sexually harassing female students under his supervision.

  • Using threats and abusive language to suppress complaints.

Multiple victims came forward with corroborating testimonies, leading the university to immediately terminate his appointment.

₦10.6 Million Farm Fund Misuse

The second lecturer, Dr. Khadeejah Kareem-Ibraheem, was found guilty of:

  • Misappropriating over ₦10.6 million generated from farm produce meant for student projects and departmental funding.

  • Unauthorized collection of funds from students.

  • Bullying and verbal abuse of subordinates and students.

Her role in the misuse of funds and reported unethical behavior led to her summary dismissal from the university system.

️ LASU Takes a Stand

In an official statement, LASU emphasized that these actions were part of a larger effort to restore safety, trust, and discipline on campus.

“The university will not tolerate any form of misconduct—sexual, financial, or administrative. These dismissals reflect our commitment to maintaining integrity and protecting our students,” the university council said.

What This Means for Students

The university has launched a confidential reporting channel for students and staff to report harassment or financial exploitation. According to the vice-chancellor, students will be protected and empowered to speak out without fear of retaliation.

Background

LASU has faced public scrutiny in recent years over allegations of staff misconduct. However, this swift and firm action signals a new chapter, aimed at rebranding the institution as a safe, inclusive, and transparent learning environment.

Undergragra will continue to monitor developments on campus and provide updates as LASU reinforces ethics and accountability within Nigeria’s higher education system.
